Jump start or new battery? How to tell
A jump start fixes a flat battery, not a worn-out one. Here is how to tell which one you have.
When your car will not start, the first question is usually: do I need a jump start, or a new battery? The answer depends on why the battery is flat.
A jump start fixes a flat battery
A battery goes flat when more energy is taken out than is put back. Common causes:
- headlights, interior lights or a charger left on,
- the car parked for weeks without being driven,
- a short trip after a long stop, with heavy AC use.
If the battery itself is healthy, a jump start gets the engine running and the alternator recharges the battery as you drive.
A new battery fixes a worn-out battery
A worn-out battery, often damaged by heat, age or the wrong technology, can no longer hold or deliver enough charge. A jump start may get you going, but the car will fail to start again, often the next morning.
How to tell the difference
| Sign | Probably just flat | Probably worn out |
|---|---|---|
| Cause | Something was left on | Nothing obvious |
| History | First time | It keeps happening |
| Before today | Starting normally | Slow cranking for days or weeks |
| Battery age | Under two years | Two to three summers or more |
| Battery case | Looks normal | Swollen, leaking or corroded |
The only way to be sure is to test the battery once the car is running. A test measures how much starting power the battery has left.
Jump-starting a modern car safely
Modern cars are full of electronics, and a careless jump start can damage them.
- Check the manual. Many cars have dedicated jump-start terminals under the bonnet, even when the battery is in the boot or under a seat. Use them.
- Never jump-start a damaged battery. If it is swollen, cracked, leaking or smells of sulphur, do not connect anything.
- Connect in the right order. Positive to positive first, then negative to a bare metal earth point or the specified negative terminal, away from the battery.
- Prefer a booster pack. A professional booster pack avoids the voltage spikes that can come from connecting to another running car.
- Drive afterwards. Give the battery at least 30 minutes of driving to recharge.
